Many psychiatrists: are also trained as therapists. I am a psychiatrist & in addition to doing evaluations and prescribing medications, I also provide individual, group and family therapy.

Training: To be a Psychiatrist they also did residency training in Psychiatry which would include all aspects of the mental health diagnosis and treatment. Then they would also have to pass board examinations and continue their continuing education in their field.

We study both: Some of us studied psychology in college, before medical school. And some psychiatry residencies (training AFTER medical school) emphasize psychotherapy, although most don't anymore. Those of us who come from such programs, or who have had additional training afterwards, include psychotherapy as an important part of what we offer our patients.

Training : Sometimes psychiatrists will undergo analytic training to become psychoanalysts. Other psychiatrists will undergo different types of psychotherapy training. These additional trainings occur after they have completed med school most of the time.
