Crepitus: Kneecap cartilage degeneration( patellofemoral arthrosis) can cause your kneecaps to hurt and make noise like 'rice crispies'(orthopedic term is crepitus).Very common and sometimes hard to treat.Please see my previous discourses on this topic... @ age 51 (i )would see an experienced ors who can discuss options( nsaids , pt, surgery)... If u have swelling, locking or >pain consider knee arthroscopy.
