A member asked:

What type of dental practice should a person diagnosed with systemic lupus go to? general, periodontal, endodontic?

General: It depends on the type of dental problem. I would start with a general dentist to find out the issue and determine if specialty care is needed. The fact that you have lupus does not change that.

Lupus: I would start with a general dentist and then take the necessary referrals to other specialists if your general dentist cannot do the specialty treatment to a high standard. Your local dental society or a local dental school would be a place to start researching an excellent general dentist.

Oral Medicine: See Oral Medicine specialist first to be sure you are receiving the best advice , care and follow-up for your dental conditions. Then ask for a recommendation for your regular dental needs. If you have no specific problems, a general Dentist should be able to provide you with excellent care. Specialists as needed after that. Best of luck.
