See an orthodontist: Before you make the decision on how to correct your bite, i would consult an orthodontist (if you haven't done so already). Many bite problems can be corrected by an orthodontist without the need for jaw surgery.

NOT YET..: The right specialist to see first is an orthodontist. Your problem may be very well solved by just wearing braces with some extractions, etc. If not, the orthodontist will tell you to have or not surgery.

Not enough Info.: This is a very complex situation that requires an examination by a dentist and even likely an orthodontist. Rely on your doctors advice, get a second opinion if your are not comfortable with what you are told, but, bottom line you need the guidance of someone that you are comfortable with and that knows how to diagnose and treat your condition.

Evaluation: Evaluation by an oral surgeon to see if jaws or TMJ are misaligned. If not, pain may be due to heavy bruxing and associated muscle spasm. This can can be helped with a soft mandibular orthotic or splint made by your dentist. Botox injection therapy may help as well. Avoid caffeine, nicotine. Heat, cold, massage and acupuncture are also helpful.
