Gradual: Don't overdue your training too fast and risk injury or burnout. I would get to 6 miles and then walk and run the next mile. Do so for a few days and then do the same as you add more miles. Don't get frustrated. The body is quickly adaptive. Also helps to run with other people who can help push you further.
