Yes: Tmj disorder often comes from chronic bruxism (grinding and /or clenching the teeth). This can cause pain in the tmj, which is located next to the ear. It can also cause earaches, headaches, pain in the teeth, neck and shoulders. An examination by a dentist can confirm TMJ disorder.

Yes: Your 14 yo may be grinding at night which causes TMJ problems. Occurs some times after a blow to jaw. Sometimes difficult to determine cause, grinding is thought to be caused by stress. During acute flare up use warm moist heat to tmj, soft diet, limit opening.

Teen TMJ disorders: Yes teens and younger children have TMJ disorders. Falls that concuss the chin can jam the TMJ which has growth centers. If these are damaged then the growth of the mandible is halted. An oral surgeon who has a 3d cone beam imaging machine needs to be consulted.

Need to determine: The actual cause of the pain. Can be myofacial pain secondary to clenching or grinding. Could be due to malocclusion. Could be due to trauma. Best option is to start with an evaluation with your general or pediatric dentist for a comprehensive history and clinical exam, x-rays ... And go from there. Tmj pain has become a generic term often misused these days hope this helps.

Yes: Tmj symptoms can appear at any age. Because a 14 year old is still growing it is sometimes difficult to determine the cause. If rhe symptoms persist see an oral pain or TMJ specialist.

Of course: Temporo-mandibular syndrome is the second most frequent cause of orofacial pain after dental pain. Headache, popping/clicking noise in the jaw joint and jaw pain are the common symptoms. Proper diagnosis is the key to successful treatment. See Orofacial Pain practitioner for a consultation and treatment options.
