Various mechanisms: Sertraline partially blocks Dopamine reuptake pumps leaving more Dopamine in the synaptic cleft to be available to trigger the neuron downstream. For instance, too much Dopamine in certain parts of the brain can cause symptoms such as delusions, while too little Dopamine in other parts of the brain can cause symptoms such as a lack of emotion and energy. Dopamine is thought to be adjusted in these various parts of the brain to proper levels by abilify (aripiprazole). It does not simply block the receptor sites.
