Figure out the cause: If you haven't responded to conservative treatment after 6 months, you need to look for what is causing your symptoms. You can start with a thorough exam of the leg, and an x-ray to look for bony problems. If the x-rays are normal, then it may be time to see a specialist or get an MRI of the ankle to look for ligament or tendon problems.

First confirm: First confirm the diagnosis with anmri of your ankle or a ct scan especially if nothing is seen on the plain x-rays.

Ankle Arthroscopy: An MRI can help evaluate for a bone chip. If there is one an ankle arthroscopy can help repair the problem and improve the pain. Arhroscopy is inserting a small camera and tool into the joint and repairing the bone chip. The surgery is pretty quick and the recovery time is short. You are young so this approach can help you and you should heal pretty quickly.
