Trauma?: Did he have a terrible fall hitting his chin prior to the onset of the pain? If so, it may be from his jaw.

Common finding: We actually have a recognized code for this to put on visit paperwork. The eardrum is supplied by a nerve that also supplies the jaw, teeth, jaw joint, etc. Sometimes tooth or jaw issues will be reflected as ear pain. Kids can also have intermittent problems with their eustachian tubes opening and closing causing a muffled feeling or pain.
