When describing to a doc the feeling of stress or being overwhelmed would it be normal to be prescribed lorazapam, never wanted any type of sedative?

Anxiolytic: It is common to prescribe lorazapam (a benzodiazepine in the same class as valium) as a drug treatment for anxiety and stress. You are right, medications are not a final solution for the underlying cause of stress. They can be a helpful tool to get through a difficult period, but it is important to get at and manage the underlying cause, rather than cover up the symptoms with medications.

Communication proble: Sounds like a communication problem. Not enough time is available in the bustle of today's medical practice. Your doctor heard you out and responded so as to give you an option for stress in the future. Your options are to respectfully decline the script or simply not fill it. Reasonable response but inadequate communication by both parties involved. Best wishes.
