Neonatal Herpes: This can be a life-threatening condition, and can occur within hours to weeks after exposure. Most cases occur during birth when the baby is in contact with infected secretions in the birth canal, most in mothers newly exposed to the virus. About 5% are infected in utero and 10% of cases are acquired postnatally. Detection and prevention is difficult because transmission is asymptomatic in most.

Are you symptomatic: Having herpes comes into play when you have a baby if you have a diagnosis of genital herpes and you have active lesions at the time of your delivery. If you did not have active herpetic lesions on your genitals during your vaginal delivery, you did not expose your baby to herpes. Hope this helps.

Herpes: The incubation period ( the time it takes for symptoms to show after infection) of herpes is 2 -14 days, however some people may not show any sign of herpes until later in life.
