A member asked:

Can heavy drinking be associated with heart failure?

Yes: There is some data that one glass of red wine a day may have some benefits, but 2 or more drinks of wine/beer/alcohol a day has the potential to weaken the heart and skeletal muscles, and damage the brain (memory), liver, and bone marrow (where blood cells are made). For some, women in particluar, even 2 drinks a day can cause these issues, and may increase breast cancer risk.

Absolutely: Large quantities of alcohol can poison heart muscle causing alcoholic cardiomyopathy. This weakens the contraction and, because people who drink that badly rarely quit, is often progressive till death. Obviously, the first treatment it total alcohol abstinence. Sometimes, because of the poor diet, replacement of vitamin deficiencies is needed. Supportive therapy for heart failure can help.
