Cotton is a fine sub: Wax is used to comfort an area on your braces that may be bothering your lip or cheeks. Anything, such as cotton that covers the rough area will work fine.

Yes, cotton is fine: Depending on how thick the orthodontic wire is you may be able to clip it shorter with a nail clipper. Usually it helps to have another person do this instead of trying it yourself.

Good idea: Best idea is get back asap to see your orthodontic specialist. He can do wonders with a distal end cutter...Make you feel better instantly. If you can't get to orthodontist, take 1 200mg advil (ibuprofen) every 4 hours w food or liquids, rinse w 1tsp salt in 8oz warm water, dab Benzocaine in orabase onto the sore spot.

Would not: it will not stay in place like wax will and will not be as comfortable. they sell wax for a couple of bucks at most supermarkets-- just go get some
