Is thalassemia major a problem in pregnancy?

It can be.: Some women with beta thalassemia major have been able to have successful pregnancies. The mother should have normal heart function and receive adequate transfusion and chelation therapy. Preconception genetic counseling is also important, since all the children will have thalassemia minor at a minimum, and could have thalassemia major themselves if their father is also a carrier of thalassemia.
