Neither: Most coughs are caused by viral upper respiratory infection, which should not be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics are indicated mainly for pneumonia.

Neither?: It depends upon the cause as to whether antibiotics are necessary at all. Most coughs are caused by non-bacterial triggers. Thus no antibiotic is the answer.Best answer is to follow the advice of your pediatrician after an examination. And , if in no distress, it is ok to wait a few days to see if the cough resolves on it's own.
