HIDA: Like most tests there are measures of sensitivity / specificity. Cholescintigraphy for acute cholecystitis has sensitivity of 97%, specificity of 94%. Sometimes scans may be misinterpreted and sometimes they may be ordered for the wrong reason.

False positives: Variability in results depends on method of test, interpretative skills, patient symptoms. It is not perfect.If gb ejection fraction is low in patient with biliary colic , chronic gall bladder disease /biliary dyskinesia probable. With acute symptoms non visualization of gb means acute cholecystitis, surgical emergency. False positives prolonged fasting, tpn, alcoholism, recent narcotic, pancreatitis.
