Is a hida scan painful?

12 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

Sometimes: You may feel a little discomfort when the medication is initially injected, but then the worst discomfort comes from having to lie still for an hour. If the dye does not get o the small intestine in that time, another medicine is often used to stimulate the gallbladder to contract. This can also cause some cramping and discomfort...But usually it is very mild.

Sometimes: Hida scans are usually ordered for 2 reasons: to see if the gallbladder is obstructed, or (when combined with cck) to check gallbladder function. Hida is painless but the cck injection may reproduce a gallbladder attack. This information is very useful since, if your pain is reproduced, it suggests that your pain is arising from the gallbladder.

No: There is an injection of a radioactive-non harmful material which should normally be excreted by the liver and when norm accumulate in the gall bladder and eventually the small intestine. There is no pain associated with the test. People with inflamed gall bladders, so called cholecystitis however may be in pain related to the inflammation.
