High until 12 months: Sudden infant death syndrome risk is very high from months 2-4 and tapers off until 12 months. It is best to practice safe sleeping habits. No pillows, stuffed animals or thick blankets in the crib with the baby. Always put your child to sleep on their back and never with a bottle. Do not allow your baby to sleep with other persons in the bed as there is a risk of rolling over and smothering.

SIDS greatly decreas: Peak incidence of sids is 2-3 months if age and then it dramatically falls. Still make sure your child is in his/ her own bed. Start them out on their back, but if they flip to their stomach don't turn them. Don't put anything in their bed but the baby. No blankets, bumpers, toys etc.

Quite low (not zero): The sids rate in the U.S., especially after we began putting babies to sleep face-up, is not high. In 1992, the rate here was 1.2 deaths in each 1000 babies. In 2002, the rate had dropped to below 0.6/1000, meaning less than one-in-a-thousand babies will die of sids. If only 25% of the sids deaths happen after turning 4 months, the death rate would only be 1-in-7000 for babies 4 months or older.
