A member asked:

Do flat bones like pelvic, shoulder blade, skull stop growing, i was told that that they are capable of growth throughout life but why? what purpose.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bones are growing..: Normal bone tissue is always being broken down and regrowing. Broken down by cells called osteoclasts and grown by cells called osteoblasts. So, in effect bones are always growing. The length of bones usually occurs while the physis (growth plate) is open ... These usually close in the late teen years.
