Venous thrombosis : The easiest way to prevent thrombosis (blood clots) is to maintain hydration and ambulate early. Leg muscle contraction massages the veins and helps prevent blood pooling in the extremities. Leg compressive stockings and a device to help keep the blood from pooling while you are recovering in the hospital help. If you are at increased risk, anticoagulation may be required.

Walking: Typical treatment after laminectomy to prevent blood clots (DVT) include leg compression stockings, sequential compression devices on the legs during surgery. After surgery, it is very important to be active - walking, being out of bed. If patients can not get out of bed often enough (weakness, pain), blood thinners may be needed.
