A member asked:

What causes kidney stones to grow? how big do they have to be before they become a concern?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Kidney stone growth: Once a stone forms in the kidney, it tends to grow by laying down of crystals on the existing small stone. This process tends to happen quicker than the inital stone formation. Crystals are less likely to form in dilute urine. When a stone is 2-3 mm or greater, they can cause significant pain when passing.
