Many causes/triggers: There is no single cause of canker sores but they are often triggered by particular foods like citrus, tomatoes ; gluten. Some are caused by sodium lauryl sulfate, commonly found in toothpastes. My favorite treatment is topical licorice extract, but homeopathy may also be helpful. Cause not known: While the cause of canker sore is unknown here are some factors associated with them that you can control. Stress is a big factor. Deficiency in vitamin b, zinc, Folic Acid can increase canker sores. So can highly acidic diet. Avoid products with sls. Read toothpaste labels and try one sls free. Hope this helps.

Too late: May be too late to stop this ulcer from developing, but you can try to prevent future outbreaks. Avoid acidic foods, such as tomato sauce, citric fruits, etc. Try to reduce stress (fat chance). Stay away from hot spicy foods. Seek toothpaste without sls (sodium laurel sulfate). Have physician check vitamin and Folic Acid levels. And, of course, don't catch colds.
