Sort of: It's not like an infection - but there's a definite family tendency, due to genes, diet, lifestyle.

Anyone can get it: You can get diabetes whether your mother has it or not. Having a mom with diabetes increases risk a bit; if your mom has type 2 ; got it before age 50 your risk is 1 in 7; if after age 50 1 in 13. Far greater risks are diet ; lifestyle. Limiting sugars ; grains, avoiding obesity and being physically active will minimize your risk. There's evidence avoiding gmo's may help too: http://bit.Ly/19xax7e.

Yes: If one of your parents has type 2 diabetes , your risk is about 20%. If both parents have diabetes, your risk is about 30%. But the main risk factor for diabetes is obesity. The more you weigh, the higher your risk. If your bmi (body mass index) is more than 35, your risk of diabetes is 100 times higher than it would be if your weight were normal.
