Lactose intolerance: Lactose intolerance is caused by the lack (or low levels) of intestinal enzymes that break-down lactose, a sugar found in milk products. The cramping experienced comes from colon gas production due to bacteria metabolizing lactose and excess water pulled into the colon by unabsorbed lactose (resulting in diarrhea).
