Can say: Ard is a syndrome of lung injury that is caused by many things, pneumonia, trauma, severe infection elsewhere besides the lungs, smoke or chemical inhalation injury, & that is only a partial list. Some of these things can strike otherwise healthy people. For example a severe flu can cause pneumonia and ards. Maybe the team taking care of her can discuss with you, ( family permitting).

ARDS: Acute lung injury can occur in healthy people who develop infections or other causes of increased inflammation. Since increased inflammatory chemicals are in the blood and this blood circulates through the lungs, it can damage the fragile membrane where air exchanges with the blood stream and cause fluid to leak into air spaces.

Lung reaction: ARDS is a lung damage from the body's reaction to a number of things: pneumonia, infection somewhere else, inflammation of the pancreas, or even drug abuse. The treatment is supportive, and it can sometimes take a long time to get better. Hang in there!

Causes...: ARDS can result from a variety of causes including infections, trauma, etc. Sometimes, the cause is not known. If the cause is found, it will be treated aggressively. The rest of the treatment is providing supportive care so her body can recover. The road to recovery from this is often very long and the prognosis is often guarded. Best of luck to all of you!
