Dr gave me xanax, (alprazolam) upon waking i feel so much more depressed. when is it ever going to end? i feel so miserable. i want to give up, am i ruined foreve

Need antidepressant: Dear eagle. Your doctor may have prescribed xanax (alprazolam) to calm your anxiety but i don't see that you have an antidepressant listed. If you are suicidal please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Otherwise make sure that you get into psychotherapy with a competent therapist as soon as possible. Also have either your family or a psychiatrist prescribed an antidepressant medication after making sure that you are not bipolar. If you are then i would recommend see a psychiatrist. The treatment is generally more complex in that case. Feeling helpless and hopeless is part of the syndrome of depression. Make sure that you keep focused on those that you love. Do not in any way except any thoughts that come into your mind that make you feel that you are toxic to them. I have been treating depression for approximately 30 years now and the prognosis is quite good. This need not ruin your life. I have personally been in treatment for depression and anxiety formany years, since age 31 and am now 58 years old. I have lost a total of two days of work during this whole time due to my illness.Follow your doctor's advice and do not ever stop any medication without consulting your physician or just because you're feeling better.
