Pacifiers help: Reduce sids and satisfy babies' need to suck. As they get older, they become a type of security blanket. There are recommendations not to start them before breast milk is established. I have never seen a pacifier interfere with breast feeding, so starting as young as you want is fine. The oldest they should have one is when it starts to misshape the teeth. That is usually from 2-4 years.
