A member asked:

I have been taking ssri escitalopram to be exact for an year but now facing problems with short term memory. can it be because of meds?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Could be from Xanax (alprazolam): Alprazolam is a short acting drug. It has effects on memory similar to alcohol, which is referred to as state dependent learning. Please google that for an explanation. What that means is that when your blood level is high you remember things that you said and did at other times that your blood level was high. Likewise, when your blood level drops you will remember things that you said and did when your blood level was low.It is for this reason that i primarily prefer to prescribe longer acting benzodiazepines such as valium or Clonazepam depending upon the persons primary anxiety diagnosis. Please discuss this possibility with your psychiatrist. Best wishes.
