Must check the heart: Anyone with severe chest pain has to see his doctor or go to the E.R. To be checked right away for a heart problem such as a heart attack. That means not waiting at home to see whether or not it turns into a really bad situation. As the saying goes, "better safe than sorry". If it turns out to be a painful lung, stomach, esophagus, or ribs problem, the E.R. Doctor can still begin treatment there.
