What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Comp. of median n.: Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve in the carpal canal.Nerve runs in canal w/ all the flexor tendons of your fingers and can be constricted easily .Repetetive hand/wrist motion can be a factor as well as other conditions(pregnancy ). Tx. Generally involves use of cock-up wrist splint@pm and nsaids . Op. Tx involves releasing nerve by resecting volar carp.Ligament.

Carpal tunnel syn: Paresthesia in hands can be a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome or median nerve compression at the wrist.See a neurologist for an emg/nct and if the carpal tunnel is moderate or severe then you wil likely get referred for surgical release by a hand surgeon. If mild cts with minimal symptoms or symptoms that settle with nsaids, rest or use of brace then you may be managed conservatively by your pcp.

A compressed nerve: A syndrome is group of symptoms and signs which form a recognisable pattern and which may have more than one cause. In the case of CTS however the classic pattern of numbness/tingling/pain in the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers, characteristically waking the sufferer from sleep at night, is almost always due to compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Pinching: The median nerve runs through the wrist in a closed tunnel with eleven tendons. When the space becomes limited, the median nerve can become compressed causing pain and/or numbness in the first three digits of the hand.
