Carpal tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a situation when there is compression of the median nerve inside the wrist. The median nerve supplies sensation to the tips of the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger. This can result in numbness, tingling, or sometimes weakness of certain movements.

A compressed nerve: A syndrome is group of symptoms and signs which form a recognisable pattern and which may have more than one cause. In the case of CTS however the classic pattern of numbness/tingling/pain in the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers, characteristically waking the sufferer from sleep at night, is almost always due to compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Pinching: The median nerve runs through the wrist in a closed tunnel with eleven tendons. When the space becomes limited, the median nerve can become compressed causing pain and/or numbness in the first three digits of the hand.
