apply ice: I would soak my finger in a combination of ice and water on and off for the next few hours. If it does not get better you should see a doctor in a few days.

After a puncture: Wound, swelling and stiffness would be expected but if the area stays swollen, gets red, gets more swollen or has signs of increasing pain with passive motion, that could be a sign of infection. It is something ot watch for. While dramatic, a staple in the hand or finger often doesnt cause any long term issue. Of course changes in sensation or motion that remain need attention.
