2nd trimester bleed: Second trimester bleeding may result from several conditions. Old brown blood is not the result of an active bleed, but is more likely from a previous event. These are most commonly from prior subchorionic bleeds (implantation bleeding). If infection has been ruled out, the other concern is an incompetent cervix. An exam and transvaginal ultrasound can assess the cervix length.
