Hernia: Ask a surgeon, but i think a lifting belt is a bad idea. It will redirect and concentrate force on the areas not covered thereby putting more pressure on the surgically repaired area not covered by the belt).

As tolerated : You should perform all activities as tolerated by pain and discomfort in the area if the hernia repair. If this lots your activities, you should see your surgeon for an exam to make sure nothing is wrong. Some patients unfortunately will have some limitations even if everything was done perfectly, but it should get checked out at least if you are having problems.
