Need biopsy: The only way to tell for sure is to have a biopsy. It is quite possible that it is merely an irritation from your permanent retainer. Definitely mention it at your next appointment. If you are really concerned, by all means go sooner.

You can't...: But your physician and/or dentist will evaluate the "bump" and determine if further tests are necessary. You have an appt, which is the first step. You may be biting that area while you sleep, or grinding your teeth, or the retainer is irritating that spot. At 17 yo, a tumor would be very rare... But have it looked at anyway.

Have it examined: The chance of a serious growth on your tongue is minimal at your age. Whether or not it's normal, an inflamed papilla, a small benign growth or something else can be determined once you see a dentist to have it e-valuated. Most likely this will not even need to be biopsied but does need to be seen, especially if it’s been there more than 2 weeks.
