Will depend upon you: Depending on your level of apprehension and perception of discomfort and pain, arthrocentesis and lavage of the TMJ can be performed under different types of anesthesia. Some patients elect to have it performed under local anesthesia alone, while others may choose to be sedated with IV conscious sedation or general anesthesia. You will still receive local anesthesia in the joint space.

NO lavage: Whoa! the TMJ is a very complex area , how would you feel if you dislocated your shoulder? You would be sore for several months. I would advise 1) 3d cat scan --> to made sure the architecture of the TMJ is ok 2) 1-2 wks of anti-inflammatory meds-> to help hasten healing , 3) a soft diet without opening mouth too wide for 2-4weeks-> this joint must not be stressed to allow healing.

Question?: I'm not sure what your question is. If you've tried appropriate non-surgical therapy. Jaw lavage can be very successful under either general anesthesa, light sedation, or even local anesthesia. I'd go with what anesthesia your surgeon is most comfortable iwth.
