No.: It is not normal to have to use self catheterization 5 years after a bladder sling procedure. You need to be evaluated to determine if sling is obstructing the urethra or if something else is wrong. See someone with a lot of experience dealing with mesh related complications. Get another opinion if needed.

No: Having done thousands of slings, I've found that mesh slings are more "all or none" on voiding. Assuming you were emptying normally prior to your sling surgery, then chances are you are obstructed from the surgery. If this is the case, consideration should be given for sling revision so see a specialist for an opinion.
