Be seen: Any trauma? Most frequently something on top of the carotid. Rare aneurysms. Occasional twist or kink in older persons mri would have spotted an aneurysm generally.

Extremely unlikely : This lump may be due to a curve in the artery or just being closer to the skin. It may not even be the artery! an ultrasound of the carotid arteries will tell the story and is safe and painless.
