Mucus ; aspiration: Mucus can drain into your bronchial tubes, but you would be coughing to keep it out of your lungs. Bits of food may still be on the back of your throat when you're coughing, and come up that way. If your cough or gag reflex is impaired for any reason, then secretions and food can be aspirated. This can happen when someone has had a stroke, for instance.
