HPV testing: Because hpv is so common in young people and the overwhelming majority of young women will clear it on their own with no problems hpv testing is not done. Above age 30 hpv cotesting with a pap has a better detection rate for cancer prevention. A hgsil pap is not treated. It triggers a diagnostic test called a colposcopy where the cervix is examined under a microscope.

explanation:: The pap test itself is very good at detecting a high-grade lesion (or lower grades as well) but the pap itself is what is looking for the changes, and if those changes (esp. High grade) are present, it is assumed that they are due to hpv. For women with normal paps, the chance of cancer is low, and >30yrs, with even normal paps theres a small risk of cancer, so >30, even nl paps get tested for hpv.

HPV: If you have high grade cervical dysplasia and hpv this should be treated now. See another gynecologist if the one you are seeing will not explain their rationale to you.
