Several things: The one thing you want to make sure you don't have first is a blood clot. Clots in deep or superficial veins can do this. It could also be an infection. Need to get it checked out.

Possible meniscus: You need to be seen by an orthopaedic surgeon to evaluate your knee for a possible meniscus tear. You need an exam and an mri. If torn, arthroscopic surgery can trim the tear and improve your symptoms quickly. This is a picture of your meniscus seen here. It is the shock absorber between the femur and the tibia cartilage surfaces. This one is normal.

Things to consider. : Your son is 11 years of age and he is due to have a tetanus booster at this age. As for the shin cut, hopefully it was cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and treated with an antibiotic ointment. The best thing to do is to schedule an appointment with his pediatrician or family physician to get his shot and check on his cut.
A male asked:

Why does my hamstring hurt? The pain itself is pinpoint and random. It lasts for a few seconds, occurs while i'm stationary and only in my left leg. While not severe, it is distracting, especially while i'm at work. There are no marks, swelling or redness

You : You could have a tendonitis of the muscle attachment. This is usually relieved with medications such as advil, (ibuprofen) stretching, or physical therapy. The worst thing that could cause leg pain is a blood clot however, so if you had pain, swelling, or new symptoms then please be seen for a leg ultrasound.
