Compartment syndrome: Exercise induced exertional compartment syndrome can occur in the leg muscles of athletes or anyone with a chronic overuse injury or sudden uptick in level and intensity of impact activities (e.g., running). The muscles compartments (usually anterior and lateral) can become rock hard and decompress/soften with rest. Seek evaluation by an orthopaedic surgeon to assess your condition.
