Birth defect?: I thought gastroschesis was a condition whereby a newborn has a defect in his or her abdominal wall causing the intestines to be outside of the body. I could be wrong.

Birth defect: Abdominal contents form outside the body in early fetal development.During the 10th wk,they are supposed to return through the abdominal wall and assume their normal position. The name"gastroschisis" or split stomach is confusing, because it is the failure of the abdominal muscles/wall to close behind the guts that produces the defect.Delivery in in a tertiary hospital is needed.
