Is klonopin (clonazepam) the answer to social phobia?

Just a temporary fix: The real treatment, will be a combination of cognitive behavior therapy, with or without anti-anxiety medications, depending in the severity of the symptoms. The goal is that you will be able to control your phobia through learning different tool to put mind over mood, and stop the medications. It may take 3-6 months or longer, but it will help you feel a lot better in the long run.

Desensitization: Start regularly socializing with small, and i mean small groups of people you know personally in a variety of social situations, and slowly increase the number of friends. Then, slowly have your friends invite people you may not know personally, just one or two to start with, and increase the numbers of known and unknown people over time. Should the anxiety spike, stick with smaller mixed groups o

Complicates things: The difficulty in using benzodiazapines for anxiety is that avoidance drives anxiety and repeated use of the drug drives avoidance. In other words, if a anti-anxiety pill is taken every time one becomes anxious, in the absence of acquiring tools to manage being activated, then one's brain does not have the opportunity to learn that situations that appear threatening can be effectively managed.

Seldom does a pill: Offer a solution to something as complex as Human cognition and emotional response. Even the simplest physiological processes in Humans are infrequently completely solved with a single pill. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is your best bet, and keep in mind there are a multitude of drugs that can help with anxiety. Many have better safety and side effect profiles than Klonopin (clonazepam). Talk with your Doctor.

No: It's a quick fix but it's easier, more effective, and frankly more enjoyable to work with someone who can guide you to understanding people and learning skills to be successful. Often folks who grow up in difficult environments needs a guide in abandoning flawed ways of thinking and finding initial successes that will get you on a positive upward track. Finding a good counsellor is the key.

Maybe using both: therapy and medicine would be helpful. Sometimes the techniques are not enough and you need both. Just something to consider. cognitive behavioral therapy and EMDR can help to desensitize you to troublesome situations. Good luck.
