URI (common cold): We no longer use color of phlegm to determine need for antibiotics. Most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses which won't respond to antibiotics. Average duration of cough illness is 18 days so be prepared to cough for a while. Most sore throats are viral, not strep or bacterial. Go see your doc re centor criteria (http://www.Mdcalc.Com/modified-centor-score-for-strep-pharyngitis/).
