Rib fractures : They healed inappropriately. Simple rib fractures are treated conservatively with pain management only. Certain rib fractures that result in breathing difficulties and / or relentless pain are treated surgically. I use titanium plates to repair the chest wall.

That Depends: No doctor is going to say conclusively no to that in my opinion. However, most broken ribs are treated conservatively with pain medication and avoidance of aggravating factors. The problem is that a severly displaced rib fracture could compromise lung function. Fortunately, most rib fractures just hurt, a lot.
A 45-year-old member asked:

How long will I be required to stay in a hospital for a broken rib?

Dr. Richard Bensinger

Usually not: Most broken ribs are minimally displaced and are treated with taping to minimize movement and discharge home from the er with anti-pain medication. Rarely a broken rib is significantly displaced and can threaten to puncture lung or its linings and that may generate a hospital admission.
