MC fx: Not sure why you want to wait. If the fracture needs to be fixed it is best to do so within the first 10 days. After that the surgeon will have to break through some of the healing to get the bones aligned. It can still be done just more complicated.

? Boxers' fracture: The commonest fracture of the 5th metacarpal is that of it's neck and is also known as the boxers' fracture. It can be easily handled as an office procedure by your hand surgeon. Other fractures may need surgical repair by placing plates and screws. Average healing time is usually 6-8 weeks but for a lot of hand fractures the splint/cast is only half that time and then rehabilitation is started.

2-3 wk max: This type of fracture heals very quickly (6--8 weeks) it is easily manipulated into place within the 1st few weeks and can be splinted or pinned. After 2-3 weeks if the deformity warrants it (angulation/rotation) surgery still can be performed but may require an open procedure. This is because the bones are already starting to knit.
