what does a carotid artery bruise sound like?

Bruit?: Do you mean a "bruit"? That refers to an abnormal flow of blood with "whooshing" sound using a stethoscope. It indicates a degree of blockage in the carotid artery and should be followed up with a dedicated carotid ultrasound.
