Abuse vs dependence: Drug abuse is using too much ; having consequences. Dependence, or addiction, involves development of craving ; compulsion, tolerance ; @ times withdrawal. An alcohol abuser drive drunk ; get a dui, but isn't compelled to drink again, nor lose control once starting to drink. An alcoholic may be able to stay sober or have 1 drink @ times, but sometimes can't avoid the first drink ; then can't stop.

An alcoholic I know who is several years sober put it beautifully: "Sometimes I can have just one drink, but I never know if that will work or not until the second drink."
