No prednisone: In general, Prednisone should not be prescribed for shingles. Steroids are sometimes used to treat shingles in the elderly, who are at higher risk of post-herpetic neuralgia (long-lasting pain after recovery). However, this is still controversial. (and yes, Prednisone can make you gain weight.).
