What is the best pain relief for baby being circumcised?

Local + sweet: The insertion of a small amount of Lidocaine along the 2 nerves on the back of the shaft numbs the area where work will be done & a bit of sugar solution in the mouth as a distraction also helps along with a comforting staff that helps sooth the infant during the procedure. Many seem to fuss more while being placed in the restraint board than they do for the rest of the procedure.

LMX cream for 1/2hr: Lmx or similar cream on outer shaft skin & 2% Lidocaine jelly on glans when exposed. Suck on sweetease (sugar water) to release endrophins which will minimize pain.Does not need injection of local anesthetic as pain from injection matches or may exceed pain of the circumcision. We found this in a trial many years ago by quantitating & comparing amount of crying from circs with & without injection.
